RAF Wendling was home to the 392nd Bomb Group from 1943 to 1945. Built in 1942, it was originally planned to be an RAF Bomber Command airfield. Improvement and expansion works were carried out in 1942 and 1943 prior to the arrival of the 392nd and their B-24 Liberators. Wendling was handed back to the RAF in 1945, where it was used as a maintenance airfield, before eventually being sold off in 1964.
