Using the images from the American Air Museum's archive

This does not supersede the full Terms & Conditions, but provides a short summary in plain English to help you in deciding what to post and how to use this site.

A large amount of time, money and effort has been expended to make this content available online. Much of the information has been obtained from other organisations and people. We expect website users to respect their generosity and to think about what is fair before using it. This site rests on sharing of materials related to our collective past so that we can all appreciate them, and together create a fitting online memorial to the people they depict.

We are committed to respecting copyright and other intellectual property rights. We make every effort to protect IWM’s copyright and Crown Copyright as well as pay attention to copyright in any third party material, so that we can fully use and promote our assets and safeguard our collections to enrich people’s understanding of the causes, course and consequences of war.

By posting an image or other document on this site, you are agreeing to make it available under the same Creative Commons licence which we are using. Creative Commons licences are designed to provide a standard way for content creators, their rights holders and those with permission from the rights holders to grant someone else permission to use their work. When you upload images and other documents, please make sure that if you did not author them yourself, you have permission from the person who did.

The licence which is applicable here is “CC-BY-NC”. You can find out more about it here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/

This is an Attribution Non-Commercial licence, which means that:

  • All works must be attributed to its original creator
  • The licensee cannot use the work for commercial purposes

You can download good quality copies of the images on our site for your own personal use, or use in a non-commercial context. If you use material from this website, please link back to us.

You may not use the website, its content, information or features to create your own work for commercial purposes unless you have our permission (and/or that of the owner of the copyright/database rights in the work) in writing. You may however use content for blog postings, articles and presentations for informational and educational purposes and for professional family history research (limited to unpublished reports for clients if you are a professional genealogist).

If you want to use an image commercially, i.e. in a publication, you need to go to http://www.iwm.org.uk/commercial/licensing and follow the process there. Remember that this only applies to IWM images which you can recognise as they will begin with an FRE code (which you will need in order to order them). For images which are not IWM, you need to seek the permission elsewhere.
