The tree-top mission 18 September 1944 to drop supplies for 'Operation Market Garden' was a great contrast to all the other high altitude missions. Our pilot, Ned Twining, had to raise the plane to clear church steeples. We suffered many small-arms holes in the plane including one in the hydraulic reservoir, which our engineer patched with chewing gum. When the main gear came down for landing, we found the right tire was flat. Ned managed to keep us on the runway by pressure on the left brake with both feet. The plane, #478, P, the last olive-drab on base did not fly another regular mission. It crashed on a practice mission after it was repaired. Entered service at Rutland, VT 8 March 1943. Joined 392nd BG 12 July 1944. Rank at end of WW II was Tech. Sergeant. Pilot-Edmund Twining. Discharged 28 September 1945.
