Object Number - UPL 34926 - SSgt William J. Mulholland at Shipham, 1944.

Bill went on flight status at the age of 30. He acquired the nickname "The Count" or "Count Nickels" after telling the other flyers tales of working in the NYC subway System where he said the change booth attendant was called "Count Nickels."

Mullholland arrived in the UK on 1 June 1943 and worked as an instrument specialist and mechanic for the 44th Bomb Group, he spent 10 days at Chorley replacement centre. In January 1944 he was trained as an aerial gunner and given operational status.

From February 1944 to March 1945, Mullholland completed 30 missions. He often flew as waist gunner, but also served as togglier, ball turret gunner, nose gunner, top turret gunner and tail gunner on occasions.
