Roger Knierim attended Center Street Elementary School then the Mentor High School, Mentor, Ohio, graduating in 1939. He enlisted in the Air Corps in March 1942 and trained as a gunner. Sent overseas, he was assigned to the 579th Bomb Squadron, 392nd Bomb Group and was a Top Turret Gunner/Engineer on the 1st Lt Norbert J. Wick crew.
