Shot down 4 March 1943 in B-17F #42-5370, 91BG/324BS while serving as Engineer/Top Turret Gunner. The aircraft was shot down by enemy aircraft and crashed near Texel Island, Holland, but TSGT Nettles was able to parachute to safety and was captured as a Prisoner of War (POW) All other crew members died.
