Quentin Valle Brown
MilitaryAs they flew their B-17 out of Gander in March 1944 an 'accented' voice out of the command radio said "Have a good flight Americans so we can see you in POW camp". This was from a German submarine stationed off the coast to monitor the outward bound planes.
Bombardier/Gunner Brown's first combat mission with the 94th BG at Rougham was to somewhere in the vicinity of Chartres and they had strict instructions to avoid hitting the Cathedral.
On 10th April, flying for the third consecutive day, the target was Poznan in Poland - the longest ever combat mission, a record eleven hours. To cope with such a distance they were issued with British iron rations. They got separated from their Group and were attacked by fighters so the pilot ordered bombs away and headed for home. In all they were hit by three lots of fighters on that one trip; it was never that bad again.
Awards: POW, PH, American campaign, EAME, WWII Victory.
