Shot down 27 May 1944 in B-17 #42-31975 'Queen Of the Air', Killed in Action (KIA).
Purple Heart with 1 oak leaf cluster awarded 2 Feb 1944 for injuries sustained on a bombing mission 31 Dec 1943 with the 351st Bombardment Group. Right waist gunner on 15 B-17 missions. Planes included "Queen of the Air," #42-31975, the plane that was shot down leading to his death, and "My Devotion." #42-30857. A memorial to Lyle and the 7 crewmates who perished with him, down a narrow forest road, is placed at the address, La Maxerelle , 88-Vosges , Grant Est , France. The memorial has the insignia of the 510th BS on top and a piece of the plane's propeller on the right side. Other parts of the plane can still be seen on the site.
