Lyle Austin Norquist, with his crew on the B-17 #42-30857, "My Devotion," some time between the day "My Devotion" was assigined to the base at Polebrook, UK on 22 Sep 1943 and the day Lyle lost his life while serving as right waist gunner on B-17 #42-31975, "Queen of the Air" when it was shot down over Ludwigshaven, Germany on 27 May 1944. The plane shown and "Queen of the Air" were assigned to 510th BS/351st BG. Rear(l. to r.): Lt. John R. White, Lt. Henry Morris, S/Sgt. Darwin D. Reppard, S/Sgt. William S. Maupin, Lt. James A. Taylor, Lt. Richard L. Plouf. Front (l. to r.): T/Sgt. Fred H. Wright, T/Sgt. Lyle A. Norquist, S/Sgt. Dwight E. Suddock, S/Sgt. David W. Flanzbaum. Suddock was one of two survivors on "Queen of the Air" when it was shot down. He evaded the scene but was taken prisoner and interned at Fresnes (France), then was one of 168 aviators deported to Buchenwald on 15 August 1944 and finally to Stalag Luft III in Sagan. He died in Emporia, KS in 1995.
