SEATTLE SLEEPER.
Seattle Sleeper was underway from Bassingbourn to Altenbeken in Germany. The intention was to bomb and destroy the railroad viaduct, being the vital supply line for all sorts of war goods to the Ruhr industrial district. About ten minutes before bombing the Initial Point the squadron was attacked by 40 German fighters.
The Seattle Sleeper left the battle badly battered, other planes were less lucky. During its dive from 18000 ft to about 11000 ft it managed to destroy the attacking German hunter aircraft ME-109 Messerschmitt.
