My father, George W. Freas, was stationed at Rattlesden with the 447th Bomb Group, the 711th Bomb Squadron. Co-pilot on his B-17G, he was shot down on March 16, 1944, on a mission to Augsburg. His parachute failed to deploy at first, He became separated from his crew as the plane crashed in northern France. He was MIA and taken in by the French Resistance. He was captured by the Gestapo in May 1944. The US Army Air Corps declared him dead on August 24, 1944. He was finally transferred to Stalag Luft I in October, 1944. His parents learned he was alive in December 1944. I am researching and writing my father's story.
