Detailed History

The Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial is the largest Second World War American cemetery in Europe. Located near Saint-Avold in France, the site holds the remains of 10, 489 military dead. Most of the headstones belong to servicemen who perished advancing towards the Rhine in Autumn 1944. Another 444 names are honoured on the Wall of Missing. A large memorial overlooks the headstones, with maps and narrative outlining the Rhine advance and other military activities.

The 80th Infantry Division liberated the region in November 1944 and temporary cemetery was established in March 1945, close to the modern site. The modern, permanent site was selected for its improved location, it was designed by Murphy and Locraft and landscaped by Allyn R Jennings. It was dedicated in 1960. The Lorraine American Cemetery is owned and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
