Detailed History

The Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial lies seven miles from the German border near Welkenraedt in Belgium. The site commemorates 7,992 military dead, the majority who fell during the First Army's push into Germany from France, Belgium and Holland in September 1944 or during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944- January 1945. A chapel and museum overlook the headstones and honour the sacrifice and achievements of American forces.

A temporary cemetery was established at Henri-Chapelle in 1944 after the Allies liberated the area. A program for the repatriation of American remains for permanent burial in the United States commenced in July 1947. 5,600 fallen were disinterred from Henri-Chapelle in the first shipments in October 1947. The permanent cemetery was designed by Holabird, Root and Burgee and landscaped by Franz Lipp and dedicated in 1960. The site is owned and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
