Douglas Herrick served as a navigator with Harry E Wight's crew (Crew 71 assigned to 571 BS, 390 BG), which arrived at Framlingham on 17 Nov 1943 as part of a large expansion of the Eighth. He flew his first mission on 5 Dec 1943 and the last on 7 May 1944 to complete his tour.



Herrick only flew once with crew 45 (on 24 February 1944), which was assigned to another Squadron, namely the 570 BS. On his first mission Lt. Herrick flew with Crew 70 but for all other missions, except 24 February 1944 mentioned above, he flew as part of his regular team, Crew 71.



His brother, Maurice R Herrick, was a Navigator in WWII. He was killed in action on 13 January 1945. He was stationed at Molesworth, England with the 303rd Bomb Group. He is buried in Lorraine, France. A second brother, Kenneth Herrick, served in the Army. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.



His oldest brother, Howard Herrick, was in the National Guard, due to his age he could not enlist to go overseas for war. His other brother, Gordon Herrick, was in the Army and was in WWII. All his brothers who were able to enlist and go to war, did so. His youngest brother, Keith Herrick, was too young and was still in High School in Grandville MI. Douglas graduated from Grandville High School in Grandville, MI.



After the war Douglas Herrick was an instructor for the Air Force in California.
