From November 1943 to February 1944, Williams completed 26 combat missions with the 388th Bomb Group, serving as co-pilot for Wendell Hulcher on all, but his first mission.
Upon completion of his tour Williams re-trained as a Fighter Pilot, and joined the 4th Fighter Group at Debden from June to November 1944, where he claimed 1 enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground.
