His Gun Blazes in Raid Over Tunis
Calm, but with determined accuracy, waist-gunner Robert L. Doremus controls his blazing gun as he directs fire at enemy planes. This action took place when Flying Fortresses accompanied by the deadly P-38s bombed Tunis in one of the biggest air raids on the Tunisian front. Twenty-year-old Doremus of Henrietta, Okla., hero of the operation, kept his guns going all the time.
Assigned to 352BS, 301BG, 8AF USAAF. Waist Gunner aboard B-17 41-24352 'Holey Joe', 1942-43. Retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant in the 1960's.
Awards: SS, AM (9OLC), GC, PH, Distinguished Unit Citation, Outstanding Unit Award (OLC), AF Commendation Medal (OLC), WWII Victory, EAME (4 Battle Stars), National Defense, American Campaign and Defence Medals.
