Shot down 27 January 1943 in B-24D 41-23776 'Spirit of '76' while serving as Pilot. Killed in Action (KIA). Target was Wilhelmshaven, but weather conditions were poor. Plane was attacked by FW 190s, caught on fire, exploded and crashed on Terschelling Island, Holland.

1st Lieutenant Maxwell W. Sullivan, Jr., was born June 19, 1918 in New Jersey. His next of kin was his father, Colonel Maxwell W. Sullivan, Sr. His hometown of record was Washington, D.C. He graduated from West Point in 1941.
On January 27, 1943, he was the Pilot of B-24 “Spirit of ‘76,” tail #41-23776, of the 44th Bomb Group, 68th Bomb Squadron, when it went down over the island of Terschelling, Netherlands. 
He is buried in the US Military Cemetery at Margraten, Holland.
