On 24 December 1944, Staff Sergeant Matthew W. Grdeń was performing his duties as a B-17G Radio Operator in the 303rd Bomb Group's Mission No. 364, when his plane crashed near Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, and both he and Sgt. Earl M. Dugan was captured and became Prisoners of War.
