Jesse "Red" Franks, Jr. was killed in action (KIA) while on TDY to 9th Air Force on the Ploesti bombing mission when his assigned B-24D, Eurocyldon The Storm, 42-40612, was shot down and crashed in flames from low altitude. Two of the crew, SSgt. Charles Reed and SSgt. James Vest survived bailing out of their bomber and were taken prisoner. 2 POW. 10 KIA. 1 Aug 1943.
