The Republic P-47 'Snafu' (A/C No. 42-74742) Of The 78Th Fighter Group, Belly-Landed At 8Th Air Force Station F-357 In Duxford, England On 15 December 1944. - P-47D 42-74742 "Snafu" of the 83rd Ftr Sq, 78th FG (coded WZ-D underscored) suffered a landing gear failure on 15 December 1944 with CAPT Earl L. Steir at the helm. The ship had formerly been assigned to CAPT Julius P. Maxwell (coded WZ-O) and nicknamed "War Eagle."
