Bowen was KIA on 16 September 1944 while on a practice mission. The crew had yet to begin their combat tour. Svobodny was assigned to take over the crew. He lead them on their first 24 combat missions. When he tour was up, Dyson took over and lead the crew for the final 11 combat missions.
