An exploding ship, destroyed by a B-17 Flying Fortress of the 301st Bomb Group, 15th Air Force, 6 April 1943. Printed caption on image: 'Apr 7- The smoke flames spread far over the sea. Indications are that the first ship was blown to bits and that none of its crew survived.' Written on image: '(V-106-A-301 BG- 352nd Sq Ship 397_ (6-4-4301630)(12"- 11-500') 170'- Convoy off Bizerte.' Image stamped on reverse: 'This print is from US Army pictorial service.' [stamp], 'Passed for publication 7 Apr 1943.' [stamp] and '26036.' [Censor no.] A printed caption is attached to the reverse, which bares the same text as the printed caption on the front of the image.

Second World War formation badge for the United States 15th Air Force (United States Army Air Force). The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved by the US Quartermaster General on 19 February 1944. Formation note: the 15th Air Force (US Army Air Force, Fifteenth Air Force) was formed on 1 November 1943 at Tunis in North Africa and moved to Italy on 1 December.
