Detailed History
On 9 February 1945, B-17 Flying Fortress 42-31060 Pogue Ma Hone crashed near Jaraczewe, Poland after suffering a mid-air-collision with B-17 43-39149 while on a bombing mission to Synthetic Oil Plant at Lutzkendorf, Germany. The aircraft had received approval to make for Russian lines before going down. Five members of the crew were killed in action, three returned to duty and one was taken prisoner of war.
In 1991 Jaraczewe erected a memorial to the crew, which was formally dedicated on 30 June 1991- the ceremony was attended by several of the surviving members of the crew.
