Detailed History

The Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial lies in the foothills of the Voseges Mountains. The remains of 5,255 servicemen, who perished in campaigns across the Rhine, Northern France and Germany in 1944 and 1945, rest at the site. A further 424 names of missing personnel are commemorated on a memorial which sits in the centre of the Court of Honor, which also has a chapel and museum.

The cemetery was established in October 1944 by the 46th Quartermaster Company, the modern site was designed by Delano and Aldrich and landscaped by Homer L Fry. It was dedicated in 1956. In 1958, a ceremony was held at Epinal where two caskets holding the remains of unknown servicemen were selected. The Epinal caskets joined with those from the Pacific Theatre and Korean War and were re-interred alongside the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Memorial on Memorial Day 1958. The Epinal American Cemetery is owned and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
