Winston M Toomey
Military ROLL OF HONOURStaff Sergeant Winston M Toomey served as a togglier with 1st Lieutenant Ellison Miles' crew of the 92nd Bomb Group. During his 16th mission, a bombing raid against the ball-bearing factories in Schweinfurt, Germany, he was fatally wounded by flak. Despite his injuries he stayed at his post, opened the bomb bay doors and released the bombs over the target.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously, as well as the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
Staff Sergeant Toomey is buried at Cambridge American Cemetery.
