William Reinhold Mattson
MilitaryWilliam Mattson was Engineer/Top Turret gunner on B-24 #42-7484, shot down over Belgium on return from the Frankfurt mission on 29 January 1944. After landing in parachute near Plancenoit, Belgium, he was helped by Belgian citizens and members of the Comete evasion network. Hidden for several weeks in various homes in Belgium, he left Brussels for Paris on 18 April 1944. From Paris, he was led to the southwest of France, where he crossed the Pyrénées mountains, arriving in Spain on 23 April. Arriving at Gibraltar about two weeks later, he was flown back to England on 12 May 1944. Back in the United States, Mattson served as an instructor until the end of the war and was discharged on 16 October 1945 in Boise, Idaho. Evaded (EVD). Escape & Evasion Report E&E 683.
