The image is a B-17F with a Douglas line number and Long Beach style underside demarcation. These features are in contrast to the later B-17G-BO 42-31763.

After 8AF 226, Oschersleben, attempted to fly and land aircraft to save crew members who were too badly wounded to bail out. Died when B-17 #42-31763 'Ten Horsepower' crashed, along with three other crew members, including S/Sgt. Archie Mathies, who who also remained in the aircraft and who was awarded the MOH concurrently. Able-bodied crew members had bailed out over the base and survived.

Aircraft

A B-17G Flying Fortress nicknamed "Ten Horsepower" (TU-A, serial number 42-21763) of the 351st Bomb Group, piloted by Second Lieutentant Walter E Treumper and Sergeant Archibald Mathies, after the pilot was severley injured. Truemper and Mathies unsucessfully attempted to land the aircraft at Polebrook and were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honour for their bravery, 20 Feb 1944. Handwritten caption on reverse: 'Enlargement TU-A. TCU Holsford, MOH acraft.'
