He attended Drake University before joining the Air Corps in 1942. He eventually became a radio operator and arrived at Wendling December 1944. Returning from their third mission the base was fogged in and they were running low on fuel and were forced to bail out; Raymond injuring his back and right foot. Post war he finished college and was then manager of a propane and agribusiness company. He and his wife also organised a horse show for many years.
