Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Flew on Henry A. Dryar crew. Flew 35 missions. His tour with the 368th started 28 May 1944. He spent one year with the ATC at Prestwick, Scotland as a Navigation and Briefing Officer with a final release on 26 Sept 1945. He was in Paris with a traveling ATC crew when the European war ended 'they were dancing in the streets'. His most memorable experience and one that nearly cost him his life was on a “shakedown flight” of a repaired B-17. The official report stated “fuel fumes were strong in the aircraft at take off and increased as they were flying. They decided to land. Flames came from #3 supercharger and engulfed the bomb bay area and spread rapidly. On landing the ship nosed over and swerved off the runway. The Flight Engineer suffered burns and a broken leg.” The aircrew escaped from the burning aircraft and ran in case of explosion. Bob escaped out the front hatch and almost ran into the still rotating propellers. After taking one step in the wrong direction, he ran forward from under the aircraft. The plane was a total loss.
He afterwards returned to college and - following service in the Korean War- joined Banker's Life, retiring as Chairman.
