He flew on 8 missions with the 491st but was then transferred to the 15thAF based in Italy where he participated in a further 25 combat missions. On the 25th their B-24 took a direct hit in the fuel tank, they jettisoned their bombs and made a forced landing in Poland. They were held at a hotel in Lodz and guarded by Russian soldiers until their identity was established and they were eventually returned to their base in Italy.
