Richard E J Scott

Military

A Texan Richard Scott was commssioned into the Army Air Corps in 1942 and joined the 446thBG at Flixton in June 1944 as co-pilot with Ted Hufstader's crew.

His biggest complaint seems to have been concerning the rough bedding they were given, which he gradually managed to replace with GI blankets and cotton bedding bought on his very first pass to London. He also acquired a second-hand bike, an essential piece of equipment on an airfield.

After five missions they became lead crew heading the nine plane Squadron formation and then - exactly one year after arrival in England - flew back to New England in June 1945.

After the war Scott briefly flew with Braniff Airways then re-joined the USAF, retiring after thirty years with the rank of full Colonel. His five children, three boys and two girls, were all to follow careers in the Air Force
