Attlebridge, Norwich, UK | 23 March 1944 - 1 July 1944 | Completed 32 combat missions |
Other 4th Combat Mission |
Oschersleben, Germany | 11 April 1944 | Attacked by Me-109's, two 20mm shells entered the cockpit, narrowly missing the pilot, Hayes. One of the shells buried it's self in Malo's (top turret gunner) parachute, the other bounced around until it found it's way into the nose where it exploded next to Cochran's (Navigator) leg. Number 1 and number 4 engines were hit. Knocked out an oil cooler and pushrods in the #4 engine. We ran the engines on reduced power all the way back to England (loved those Pratt & Whitneys!). We also had damage to the right rudder. Malo counted 200 holes in the aircraft. |
