17-Mar-44 Shot down as Pilot of P-47D 42-74641 78FG/84FS while on a mission to provide escort to other P-47s makeing strafing attacks on German airfields in France. The aircraft crashed near Beauvais, France. 1LT Pompetti managed to bale out of the stricken aircraft and was captured as a Prisoner of War (POW) MACR 3102 1POW.
