Cranston, RI, USA | 1 September 2011 | Michael M. Scalzi Jr. age 89 of Cranston,passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011 at home. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruby E. (Quinton) Scalzi. Born in Providence , he was the son of the late Michael and Louise (Penza) Scalzi. Michael worked as a sales trainer for Olivetti-Underwood for over 20 years. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1983. Michael was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. 8th Air Force. He served as bombardier of the B-24 in the 466th bomb group stationed in Attlebridge, England. He was transferred to the 389th bomber group in Hethel and was assigned to the Pathfinder Squadron 2nd Air Division. His aircraft was selected as division lead on 29 missions, including D-Day, into enemy territory. Michael retired as a U.S. Air Force Major after serving 30 years in the Air Force Reserves. He received the following awards: Distinguished Flying Cross Medal, Air Medal, American Campaign Medal, European -African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. He also received the honorable service lapel button, four bronze oak-leaf clusters, one bronze service star and one silver service star |
