Object Number - UPL 32072 - Maynard Johnson , 2465th Quartermaster Truck Company

Maynard was assigned to the 2465th Trucking Company at the First Strategic Air Depot at Honington, England. He was placed in charge of a fleet of trucks and twenty-five drivers. Bombs were hauled from various railheads to the Depot where they were dispersed to American air bases throughout England. Each truck could carry twenty-five 500 pound bombs and pull a trailer loaded with another five 500 pound bombs. Maynard recalled his fleet had seventeen flat tires in one day from metal objects on runways and grassy areas of the bases.

In December, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge, Maynard was transferred to Belgium to haul gasoline and supplies to air bases captured by American ground forces. While there he volunteered to rescue a downed American B-17 bomber from a swampy area twelve miles behind German lines. A skirmish was fought with German troops but the aircraft was freed from its mire, re-fueled and flown back to Allied hands.

Maynard remained in Belgium until V-E Day, Victory in Europe, and then returned to England. When it came his turn for rotation back to the United States he was assigned to a cargo ship which took seventeen days to make the voyage.

In civilian life he farmed and hauled livestock; took flying lessons earning a PPL, owned 2 Cessna 120's and flew with the Civil Air Patrol for 10 years.
