Military
Snippet from 93rd Bomb Group unit history - see https://www.americanairmuseum.com/media/24962
Object Number - UPL 25581 - Leander F. Schmid (Schmidt), 93rd Bomb Group
On 10 January 1943 when 93rd was assigned to N. Africa to help defeat Rommel.
B-24D-1-CO 41-23665 'Big Dealer' had mission to La Galite (a small Mediterranean island off Tunisia). Crashed near Bir el Khamsa, Egypt. Crash may have been due to fuel shortage. 4 killed and 5 returned to action.
In Ted's Travelling Circus, reference is made that Schmidt was formerly a NY teacher and was retired by Timberlake as his mission requirements were met. Some reference is made on the web (Ploesti: The Great Air Battle) that Schmidt (also spelled as Schmid) was, with Timberlake, one of the 3 principle planners of the Ploesti raid.
