Object Number - UPL 72177 - Katherine Spaatz at the rear door of her ARC Clubmobile, February 1944

Katherine "Tatty" Spaatz was the daughter of Lieutenant General Carl Spaatz, commander of US strategic Air forces in Europe. Spaazt volunteered for the American Red Cross in Washington DC, and along with 53 other volunteers, traveled to England in July 1943. She worked with an ARC Clubmobile unit for two years, initially serving in England, before deploying to the continent following the invasion of France.

As a Clubmobile volunteer in England, Tatty traveled around bases in the Eighth Air Force' First Air Division to provide coffee and doughnuts to ground crews working on the flight line. The women rose at 4.30am to prepare the doughnuts before beginning their rounds on a converted greenline bus. Music played from loud speakers announced the clubmobile's arrival. The women served the men from a hatch, while the rear of the bus provided a small seating area where men could listen to records and read magazines.

Katherine Spaatz returned to the US in the Summer of 1945.

Katherine Spaatz is portrayed by British actor Harriet Leitch in Apple's Masters of the Air (2024).
