A file named for Joseph W. Pedersen was a pilot in the 367th BS. Plane crashed on 17 June 1944. He was shot down on his 17th mission. From his deposition: 'With the assistance of some French civilians, I was able to avoid capture until 25 July 1944. On that date I was captured by Luftwaffe personnel while I was in civilian clothes. They turned me over to the Gestapo at Le Mans, FR. I was held by them in solitary confinement for fourteen days. I was then moved to Paris, arriving there on 8 August 1944. I was held in a prison for seven days. On 15 August 1944 I was entrained for a five day trip to Buchenwald, GR. On 20 August 1944 I was sent to the concentration camp at Buchenwald, where I remained until 19 October 1944, when I was moved to Stalag Luft III, Sagen, GR by train. I arrived in Sagan on 21 October 1944 and remained there until 29 January 1945. On that date we departed from Sagan on foot to Spremberg, GR where we entrained on the 1st or 2nd of February 1945 for Nurnberg, GR. After arriving in Nurnberg on 4 February 1945, I was assigned to Stalag Luft III at XIII-D, where I remained until 4 April 1945 when we marched to Moosburg, GR, arriving on 13 April 1945. Here I was assigned to Stalag VII-A, where I remained until 29 April 1945 when I was liberated by the Third United States Army. '
