near Crestview, Florida | 19 June 1945 | The Associated Press reported on 21 June that five men were killed when their army plane crashed near Crestview, Florida, on 19 June. Officials at Marianna Army Airfield in Florida said that the plane, en route from Eglin Field, Florida to Myrtle Beach Army Airfield, South Carolina, came down in a storm. First Lt. Joseph A. McGinnis, 24, the pilot, was from the Marianna base. He was the son of Joseph A. McGinnis of Philadelphia. The others (all stationed at Myrtle Beach) were First Lt. Lawrence F. Schirmer, 25, Sacramento, California; T-Sgt. William J. Koger, 25, husband of Mary G. Koger of Louisville, Georgia; T-Sgt. William H. Epperson, 25, Evanston, Illinois; and S-Sgt. George L. Simmons, 26, of Lakeland, Florida. "McGinnis was an instructor pilot with more than 1,200 hours of flying time and combat experience with the Canadian air force before U. S. entrance in the war, and with the American air corps in North Africa, Sicily and Italy A-26B 44-35024 |
