He had graduated as a pharmacist before enlisting in August 1942 but chose to train as a bombardier. Assigned to the Group at Attlebridge they took part in the raids covering the D-Day landings 'I could see everything...it was a sight I'll never forget, a front seat to the biggest adventure of our time'.
