He entered military service 1st December 1942, joined the Aviation Cadet Program and qualified as a pilot. He flew 35 combat missions from Knettishall being discharged from military service in April 1945. He afterwards attended Notre Dame and De Paul University in Chicago and in 1949 joined the Trappists, being ordained a priest in 1954.
