Military ROLL OF HONOURNose gunner, E, Klein crew. 381st BG, 533rd BS, 8th AF. Original member of the Carqueville crew. Shot down by fighters on mission #59 to the aircraft factories at Oschersleben, Germany on 11 Jan 1944 in B-17G #42-31417 'Big Time Operator II'. MACR 1879. Sgt Counce flew in place of a Navigator and was hit by 20mm fire while in the nose of the aircraft. Killed in Action (KIA). Possibly flew up to 23 or 24 missions.

The 1st Bomb Wing/381st BG did not hear the recall while over the continent. 180 out of 700 bombers continued on the mission with no fighter cover. The 533rd BS lost 6 out of 9 bombers. The 381st BG earned its second Distinguished Unit Citation.
