Heffernan was part of Carl Falk's crew, who were the last crew to be assigned to the 466th Bomb Group who saw combat.
From 17 April 1945- 25 April 1945, he completed four missions on B-24 Liberator (serial number 44-40454) nicknamed "Betta Duck". He and his crew later flew the aircraft back to the US in June 1945.
