Donald Marner
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 26 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
'Not needed as mechanic when I arrived at base so given a 6x6 and told to pick up 108 gallon drop tanks from an RAF base and deliver them, a dozen at each hard stand every day. That way I got to meet all the crew chiefs and the other guys and helped the pilots out of their planes after the missions. I was in awe of everybody there.' The base was only three miles from the North Sea and in July and August he remembered seeing streams of V-1 Doodlebugs coming over from the launching sites in Holland. AA guns were moved onto the base often manned by the ATS who had a good eye for shooting them down. The base was also used as an emergency field for crippled aircraft and he participated in rescue efforts to remove the wounded. There were also mid-air collisions and fatal crashes. Following VE Day Donald was assigned to Neubiberg Air Base as part of the occupation force for 8 months before returning home in April 1946.
