Donald E Thompson
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Included in Donald’s missions was one on April 25, 1945, a raid on the Skoda Plant at Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. What they didn’t know at the time was this raid was to be the last bombing mission flown over Europe on a German target. The end of what had become the greatest aerial strike force the world had ever known. Flak was expected to be heavy over the target area and their plane received several minor hits. They saw two planes from their Group hit by flak and go down . Fortunately the planes were controllable and a landing in Allied territory was made.
The last bombs were dropped at ll:16 A.M. by a bomb group from Grafton Underwood. Ironically the first bombs dropped by the Eighth Air Force in Europe were also by a bomb group at Grafton, the 97th BG, which had been stationed there but subsequently reassigned to North Africa. Most important there would be no mission for tomorrow.
Donald retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve after thirty years service and was also a active in the Civil Air Patrol.
