S/Sgt Peterson was leaving the radio room to assist with the wounded waist gunner, DeForest E. Main. He stopped to go back for his parachute as the plane broke in half. "Pete" fell out of the aircraft. After being captured, the Germans had S/Sgt DeForest Main and T/Sgt William Purser witness S/Sgt Petersons body laying in a field.
