Cloman D Bogart
MilitaryOn 8 Mar 1944, B-24 41-29172 'Lucky Strike' was hit by flak over the target of Friedrichshafen, Germany and on the return flight and crashed SW of Abbeville, France, after the crew baled out. Prisoner of War.
Staff/Sgt Bogart did his initial training at the Autopilot Bombsight School at Lowry Field, was assigned to the 506th Bomb Sqdn and in February 1943 boarded SS Chantilly for the Atlantic crossing. Their convoy was attacked by U-Boats, the' Chantilly' lost power and dropped back; they later heard that 32 ships had been sunk in that convoy.
His initial job at Shipdham with the 44th BG was with the bombsight and autopilot maintenance unit but in January 1944 he volunteered for combat duty. On a mission to Frankfurt - his 8th - the plane was crippled, they bailed out over France and Bogart was captured. Eventually sent to a camp in Lithuania, all the POW's were evacuated across the Baltic when the Russians closed in in 1945 and put in temporary compounds in Germany before being marched through into American lines on 26th April 1945.
