Cicely Mary Blalock

Civilian

Cicely (née Source) was born in Southend-on-Sea in 1927, her family moved to Bedford in the 1930s, and she secured employment at the cookhouse at Thurleigh during the Second World War, where she worked as a server. Cicely was entitled to leftover food which took home and her mother often sold to the neighbours.

Cicely encountered Glenn Miller, and shook his hand at Debenhams in Bedford, and recalled how after he was missing in action rumours initially circulated that he had been killed by a pimp in a brothel in Paris!

Cicely met Thompson Blalock while working at Thurleigh. He wolf whistled her while she was carrying some food, and later came to apologise for his behaviour, and asked her on a date. Tom stood up Cicely on their first date, as he and the base Chaplain were called away on urgent business, but they rescheduled and later enjoyed their first date a Bedford Plaza.

Cicely and Tom married in 1945, they settled in his hometown of Misawaka, Indiana following the war. In the 1950 sthey returned to the UK, and eventually emigrated to Australia in the 1960s. By the 1980s Cicely and Tom had again returned to the UK, settling in Fulham.

In 1983 Cicely took part in a television programme about GI brides and was interviewed by IWM in 2014.
