Object Number - UPL 21580 - 2nd Lt Charles 'Butch' Moritz.
Lt. Moritz graduated from Effingham High School. He attended New Mexico military academy for one year, then attended the University of Illinois where he was a member of the polo team.
He enlisted in the AAF in February 1943, and received his commission at Foster Field, Victoria, Texas. He left the United States on 29-Apr-44.
Assigned to 555FTS, 496FTG, 8AF USAAF. On instrument training flight in P-51 42-103007 suffered mid air collision with P-51 42-103036 7-Jun-44. Unable to get clear of A/C, died in the resulting crash. It had been his first flight in a Mustang. Killed in Flying Accident (KIFA).
Awards: American Campaign, EAME.

NARA file reflects enlistment date of 10 Feb 1943 as Aviation Cadet in Texas. He earned the ACM and the EAME Campaign Medal with at least one bronze service star.
He was not awarded a Purple Heart due to Killed In Flying Accident/Died Non-Battle status. The National Archives and the WWII Memorial do not reflect a Purple Heart.
