Completed 35 missions, reportedly the youngest B-17 Flying Fortress pilot in the European Theatre of Operations.
On 14 February 1945 Magness' B-17 was badly damaged over Dortmund and made a forced landing in Soumagne, Belgium. All nine members of the crew were uninjured.
Joined the Marines in 1949 and wounded in the Korean War.
